Coffee Break

My cup of steaming coffee sits untouched on the table
Thoughts in my head swirl like the brown frothy liquid-
As I slowly stir in the white creamer idly, continuously.

I squint at the sudden glare of the sun peeking behind clouds
My thoughts are among those floating up there aimlessly.

The phone on the tableside vibrates, calling me back to the now
There’s more work to be done before the day is through.

My lips touch the rim of the mug, the aroma wafting to my nose
I breathe in the pungent aroma of brewed coffee on a cold afternoon
Only to spit it back out when I realized the coffee tasted bitter.
