Rain of Memories

Rain falls in the night;
The pitter-patter on the roof
Breaches sound slumber.

A dull monotonous rhythm
Plays in my head;
Rousing silenced pain in my wake.

Darkness travels to my heart
As memories barge in
Wrecking the peace I held onto so long.

Mists of the past
Take form before my eyes
And I open my arms to hold you--

Only to grasp nothing
But cold, ghostly air;
Spirits of what once were.

The early sun peeks
And I rub the signs of sleep
From dark-ringed eyes.

A heap of work waits
But I smile to myself
Relieved that even for a while...
My thoughts of you could be somewhere else.
